Apathy? Laziness?

February 14, 2008

I’ve read through the blog posts of almost everyone in my two classes and I must say that I am rather impressed by the standard of writing. What I am more surprised, however, is the lack of interest of many of you, my dear students, in reading, or more precisely, commenting on your classmates’ wonderful journal entries.

Is it that students do not bother about what their friends have to say? Or is it that students cannot be bothered to leave an encouraging or critical comment after reading? Is it apathy or is it laziness? Or is there another explanation to this phenomenon? Perhaps someone would like to enlighten me.

Anyway, I’ve embedded a video in this post. I found the video rather hilarious initially. My baby girl enjoyed it too. However, after several more viewings, I felt a little sad.

What is it in the video that is making me sad? Anyone would like to guess?

I think all of us will notice that the messy hair guy (lets call him “guy”) goes out of the scene at the end. The 2 tube-like things (or known as “tubes”) showed signs of being irritated by shaking their heads when the “guy” showed up started sining. Another incident is that the “tubes” do not continue the song even though the “guy” is trying to lead them into the song.

Also, when the “guy” was singing (at 1.24) seeming to ask the “tubes”: “can I continue singing?”, one of the “tubes” shook their heads. Maybe that is reason why he walks away. The “tubes” become more lively after that too.

Also note that the tubes keep on facing each other. They seem to be asking each other: “Did we invite this guy?”

Listen to the music carefully. Do you realise that he is integral to the song? Without him, the “tubes” cannot continue (as shown near the end).

When the “guy” comes back, the “tubes” look more lively. Maybe because they realised the importance of this “guy”

Oh, and at the last part, when the are two people speaking, one of them asked “…what is a mur-na-mur-mum?”. The other person cruelly remarked: “..who cares?”. Does he even appreciate the act? Hmmm…(I think I wrote too much…)

To me, the purple guy was trying to be like the 2 pink guys. However, the 2 pink guys is showing a negative reaction for the action. The 2 pink guys are showing him that he can only do back what he normally do and not try any other things.

Mr. Kek is most probably sad because the purple guy was trying to be like the 2 pink guys but the 2 pink guys instead of encouraging him are disapproving his attempts; just like how we not leave a comment on our friends’ blog.

Anyway, my favourite frog is in the video! GO Kermit!

hello there mr kek i suppose,
yes, indeed i feel rather apathetic towards these blogging issues. *chuckles* No offence eh?
You know, i can imagine you reading the blog out in your accent. Weird huh?
Anyway, about the video, its not supposed to make people sad. So be more cheery=) And look at its positive side. Sadness causes stress on mental health ya know?

I feel this video, in a way, is also trying to depict the struggle between individual expression and conformity. The situation is somewhat akin to the school environment. What do you think? Am I reading too much into the performance?

  8. Fong Sin Says:

Maybe I am blunt and I do get it.

I have only seen three struggles in school.

    1) Minority of the teachers (mostly relief teachers) trying to control their students.

The video obviously is not talking about teachers.

    2) Some chairperson trying to control the class.

Again, the video do not look like a class, so is not about this struggle too.

    3) Many students trying to defy every single order/ instruction.

No orders were given in the video. Therefore, this is out also.

After some more thoughts, I came up with a fourth struggle.

    4) Individuals are afraid to speak up against majority of the students.

They just want go with the flow with the thought that things will be fine and continue to be contented with their current way of life. At least no one will reject their opinions; they are not ‘wrong’. (I do not thing there is a right or wrong, it is just whether the opinion is constructive or not.)

In conclusion, they do not dare to be different; they do not dare to try. They are timorous. They might not know that there can be a difference.

This is somewhat like Galileo Galilei. He came up with the thought of the Earth revolving around the Sun and not the Sun revolving around the Earth. At his time, Sun was thought to revolve around the Earth.
